Position Summary

Function:

The Group Underwriter will support the sales force through timely and accurate risk assessment and rating of both prospective and in-force group business.  The successful candidate will train and develop skills in a hands-on environment, which will enable the individual to manage ongoing underwriting issues related to an assigned block of in-force group business.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Completion of renewals and quotations for health, dental, life and income replacement benefits.Assessment of risk and determination of appropriate rates required for revisions to existing benefit plans to ensure the requested coverage fits the risk exposure using established methodology.
  • Review new business enrollments for health, dental, life and income replacement benefits to ensure they align with the original quotation.
  • Complete and maintain required documentation to ensure all key decisions and actions are well documented.
  • Determining acceptability of insurance risks and appropriate premium rates for renewal and prospective groups in accordance with underwriting guidelines and authority limits.
  • Interim and other financial and benefit reporting for benefit plans.Support other group underwriters with large renewals, revisions, and quotations as required.
  • Willingness to pursue CEBS and/or other underwriting related courses.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Good written and verbal communication skills and be adaptable and flexible to support the sales function
  • Strong decision making, problem solving and analytical ability, with high attention to detail.
  • Bachelor of Arts in mathematics, business, economics (or a related degree) or at least 3 years of related experience
  • Highly committed to accuracy and timeliness with strong time management skills and follow through to meet multiple deadlines within tight time frames, working both autonomously and as a member of a team.
  • Motivated to learn, on what can be a steep learning curve.
  • Strong computer and numerical skills.
  • Good understanding of group benefits and a general knowledge of Alberta Blue Cross products is desirable.
