Position Summary

FUNCTION:

Alberta Blue Cross is currently recruiting an experienced insurance professional for the Team Lead position in the Medical Underwriting department.  This position is located at our head office in Edmonton.  Reporting to the Manager of Medical Underwriting, this position is suitable for those that have previous medical underwriting experience and are dedicated to providing superior leadership to a growing team of medical underwriters and administrative staff. The Team Lead will support the Manager in achieving the strategic and operational goals of the corporation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Acts as an exemplary coach and mentor to developing underwriters/administrative support staff.
  • Maintains reporting, procedural documents and acceptable turnaround targets as dictated by departmental goals. 
  • Strives to implement and achieve improvements to process and customer experience.
  • Reviews large case applications to evaluate mortality and morbidity risk.   Counter-signs on cases written by developing underwriters while providing appropriate feedback and growth goals.
  • Renders an appropriate decision, (standard acceptance, non-standard acceptance, or deferral of offer), in keeping with corporate underwriting and/or reinsurer standards. 
  • Professionally elicits information, either verbal or written, from the applicant, (and when necessary medical professionals), and accurately interprets such information to make the above decisions.
  • Serves as an expert resource and departmental representative for external/internal customers.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Working knowledge of anatomy and pathophysiology is mandatory.  Ideal candidates would be those individuals who have previous medical underwriting experience or have completed full or partial course work in the medical field.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities are preferred.
  • Must have excellent time management/organizational skills, be able to work autonomously and perform under tight deadlines.
  • Must be trustworthy, accountable and have strong interpersonal skills.
  • Completion of, or willingness to complete, ALU and LOMA courses; preference given to those who have achieved FALU/FLMI designations.
  • Must be dedicated to providing excellent customer service to internal and external clients.
