Alberta Blue Cross is currently recruiting an experienced insurance professional for the Medical Underwriting department.  This position is located at our home office in Edmonton however remote work options may be considered for the right candidate.  Reporting to the Director of Underwriting and Life Operations, this position is suitable for candidates that are experts in the medical underwriting discipline and are dedicated to providing superior leadership to a network of Medical Underwriting teams across Canada. The National Medical Underwriting Coordinator is responsible for the oversight of medical underwriting activities throughout the group of companies that distribute life and living benefit products on behalf of Blue Cross Life of Canada, as well as operational support for Alberta Blue Cross.


  • Represents Blue Cross Life of Canada as the Chief Underwriter in industry forums, vendor interactions, reinsurance interactions, product development initiatives and operational risk management protocol.
  • Reviews large case applications to evaluate mortality and morbidity risk.  Counter-signs on cases written by developing underwriters while providing appropriate feedback and growth goals.
  • Aides Alberta Blue Cross and regional offices to achieve improvements to business process and customer experience.
  • Acts as an exemplary coach and mentor to developing underwriters.
  • Travel as required to conduct on-site compliance audits of regional distributors of Blue Cross Life products and attend industry forums.
  • Creates, maintains, communicates and assures adherence to Medical Underwriting policies and procedures.
  • Serves as an expert resource and representative for external and internal clients.
  • Production underwriting, training, quality assurance and other operational responsibilities on behalf of Alberta Blue Cross as required.


  • 5+ years of underwriting experience with an established authority limit.
  • Experience in both Individual and Group Life and Living Benefits underwriting.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Willingness to travel, as required.
  • Must have excellent time management/organizational skills, be able to work autonomously and perform under tight deadlines.
  • Must be trustworthy, diplomatic, comfortable influencing without authority and have strong interpersonal skills.
  • Completion of ALU and LOMA designations; preference given to those who have achieved FALU/FLMI designations.
  • Mastery of English is required. Fluency in French is preferred.
  • Must be dedicated to providing “best in class” customer service to internal and external clients.
