Position Summary

FUNCTION:

The Business Intelligence Solution Architect’s role is to strategically architect and design BI solutions, data marts, and data stores while ensuring high levels of data availability. The individual will achieve this by strategically designing, developing, and implementing models for enterprise-level applications and systems. This individual is also responsible for defining data standards and practices. They will be a contributor in the evaluation and selection of infrastructure components such as software, hardware, business intelligence components, and networking capabilities.  This individual will act as the primary advocate of data modeling methodologies and data processing best practices.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy & Planning

  • Assess and cultivate long-term strategic goals for the data lake and/or data warehouse in conjunction with data users, department managers, clients, and other key stakeholders.
  • Develop and deliver long-term strategic goals for data architecture vision and standards.
  • Coordinate and work with other technical staff to develop database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance policies and procedures.
  • Plan and work with other technical staff to implement capacity and resource expansion to ensure data lake scalability.
  • Establish processes for governing the identification, collection, and use of corporate metadata; take steps to assure metadata accuracy and validity.
  • Establish methods and procedures for tracking data quality, completeness, redundancy, and improvement.
  • Conduct data capacity planning, life cycle, duration, usage requirements, feasibility studies, and other tasks.

Acquisition & Deployment

  • Conduct research and make recommendations on data lake products, analytics products, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.
  • Contribute to the selection of database management systems, ETL (extract, transform, load) software, data mining tools, and metadata management tools.

Operational Management

  • Identify inefficiencies and gaps in current architecture and identify on roadmap.
  • Mentor and/or provide leadership to junior members of the team.
  • Assess and determine governance, stewardship, and frameworks for managing data across the organization.
  • Develop and promote data management methodologies and standards (eg: Inmon; Kimball).
  • Address data-related problems in regards to systems integration, compatibility, and multiple-platform integration.
  • Act as a leader and advocate of data management.
  • Document the data architecture and environment in order to maintain a current and accurate view of the larger data picture.
  • Identify and develop opportunities for data reuse, migration, or retirement.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

Formal Education & Certification

  • College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science, information systems, or computer engineering and/or 8+ years equivalent work experience.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Strong understanding of dimensional modeling, theories, principles, and practices
  • Strong understanding of the Hadoop ecosystem.
  • Applied experience in business intelligence components such as R, Python, NoSQL and others.
  • Applied experience with Microstrategy, ER Studio or similar tools.
  • Experience in components necessary to secure and classify the data lake such as Atlas and Ranger.
  • Experience implementing data ecosystems with high data volume, high throughput, and various content structures.
  • Experience with database platforms, including (but not limited to) Oracle.
  • Strong understanding of relational database structures, theories, principles, and practices.
  • Hands-on experience with data architecting, data mining, large-scale data modeling, and business requirements gathering/analysis.
  • Experience with data modeling techniques (OLTP; Data Warehousing).
  • Experience with data processing flowcharting techniques.
  • Experience with business processing modeling techniques.
  • Experience in implementing enterprise data management processes, procedures, and decision support.
  • Strong familiarity with metadata management and associated processes.
  • Hands-on knowledge of enterprise repository tools, data modeling tools, data mapping tools, and data profiling tools.
  • Demonstrated expertise with repository creation, and data and information system life cycle methodologies.
  • Experience with business requirements analysis, entity relationship planning, database design, reporting structures.
  • Project management experience.
  • Good knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.
