Community impact

Alberta Blue Cross^® is a community-minded organization. We take great pride in the active role we play in our communities, and we strive to make a positive difference in the lives of the people around us.

Below are just some of the ways we support our communities. Our employees play a part in these initiatives, and we encourage you to get involved with a cause that’s meaningful to you!

Hearts of Blue

Hearts of Blue is an employee-led charity championed by Alberta Blue Cross^® team members. The Hearts of Blue committee—comprised of volunteers from across the organization—works with grassroots charities throughout Alberta to provide them with essential items. Team members are encouraged to support Hearts of Blue through volunteer opportunities, tax-deductible donations, physical donations during collection drives or by joining the Hearts of Blue committee. Days of Giving

Finding time to volunteer isn’t always easy. That’s why Alberta Blue Cross^® introduced Days of Giving to provide employees with opportunities to volunteer during their workdays. Once a year, you can volunteer for a Days of Giving event up to four hours during the workday. Events are coordinated by Hearts of Blue, so all you have to do is talk to your manager and put your name forward.

Care for a Cause

Every year, Alberta Blue Cross^® team members raise thousands of dollars to support various local charities. Care for a Cause profiles a different Canadian charity each month, and every donation is matched by the ABC Benefits Corporation Foundation. Our team members' generous contributions make a difference to the charities we support and our community. Keep an eye on News to Use for more information on Care for a Cause.

Employee Giving Campaign

Every fall, a committee of dedicated Alberta Blue Cross^® team members spearheads our Employee Giving Campaign. During the campaign, you can donate to any Canadian charity of your choice and Alberta Blue Cross^® will match your donation up to $100. Get involved by attending our kick-off party, lunch and learns and team events.

Partners for Life

To help save lives across the country, Alberta Blue Cross^® works closely with Canadian Blood Services through its Partners for Life program. During scheduled times, the Canadian Blood Services Life Bus which transports team members from the Edmonton office to their donation appointments.

Built Together grant program

Every year, our Built Together grant program awards $50,000 grants across Alberta to create spaces for active living, with 1 grant each for Edmonton, Calgary, a secondary city, a rural community and an Indigenous community. From skateparks to outdoor gyms, Built Together has funded more than 45 projects, investing more than $2.4 million to support active living.

Street team

The street team is a group of team members who attend various sponsorship events—like the Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival and Built Together project openings—throughout the year to hand out Alberta Blue Cross swag, say hello and represent our organization. Scholarship program

Alberta Blue Cross funds 65 scholarships annually ranging from $750 to $1,500. Increased access to education leads to increased wellness overall so we’re happy to help young Albertans start that journey.
