Your total package benefits

Based on your employment status, you may be eligible for the following benefits.

An introduction to our benefits package

We’re a wellness-driven organization who strives to make our employees’ lives as enriching as possible through a wide range of health and dental benefits.

Together, we make Alberta Blue Cross® a fun, challenging and inclusive place to work.

Your health and dental plan options

For both health and dental benefits, you can choose between three different plan tiers—Gold, Silver and Bronze—for a total of nine benefit plan options. The levels you choose will also determine the number of spending account credits you can direct to either your Health Spending Account (HSA) or Wellness Spending Account (WSA).

Your WSA assists you to pursue an effective level of health and wellbeing. Items covered include gym memberships, fitness classes, personal interest programs, child and elder care and much more. Your HSA covers health-related items approved by the Canada Revenue Agency. You have the option to allocate credits (if included in your plan selection) to either your WSA or HSA.

Following your first day orientation, you will be registered for an online benefits eLearn to gain additional information before selecting your benefits.

Additional benefits

Educational assistance

At Alberta Blue Cross®, we are firm believers in growing our people. One way some of our employees choose to grow is through further education. Our educational assistance program offers $4,000 a year to permanent full-time employees and $2,000 a year to permanent part-time employees. You can use these funds to pursue higher education, training programs and professional development courses.

Employee Short-Term Incentive Plan (STIP)

We share in each other’s success at Alberta Blue Cross®. To recognize the contributions all our employees make to the company, we introduced the Employee Short-Term Incentive Plan (STIP) for all permanent employees.

STIP provides employees an annual targeted incentive of up to five percent of their base pay, based on corporate performance targets. STIP payment calculations are made in December and paid to eligible employees the following April. Updates on corporate targets are shared throughout the year.

Work and parking allowance

All employees will receive a taxable work style allowance of $90 per month. This allowance will be paid every two weeks to all employees and will appear as a separate, taxable line item on pay statements. It can be used for any expenses related to your work style, including transportation to and from work, parking and at-home office expenses and more.

Vacation

During your first 5 years with Alberta Blue Cross®, you are entitled to 15 annual vacation days. That number goes up to 20 vacation days after five years of service, 25 vacation days after 10 years of service and 30 vacation days after 15 years of service.

Flexible self, sick and family care days

Life happens, and we want you to take care of yourself and your family when it does. Every full-time employee has up to 12 sick and family care days available to them each year; part-time employees are eligible for nine days.

New hire allowance

Permanent new hires will be eligible for a $500 allowance to assist with setting up an at-home office (such as purchasing a new chair, desk and office supplies) that they will receive on their first pay. This is a taxable benefit.

Supporting your wellbeing

Healthy living

Workplace wellness

We believe we have the potential and responsibility to impact people’s lives for the better. That’s why wellness is a significant part of our Blue For Life® vision. A meaningful pursuit of health and wellness allows Albertans to go further—to enhance their capacity to live, work, travel and play. Wellness looks different to everyone and at times it can seem overwhelming. That’s why at Alberta Blue Cross®, we give you the tools and resources to maintain all four pillars of your own personal wellness: physical, mental, social and financial. We want you to take care of yourself and ask for support when you need it. We are #heretohelp

Wellness breaks

On top of your regular breaks, every employee is encouraged to take one fifteen-minute wellness break a day. A wellness break is a chance to take some time for yourself. This could be participating in a quick meditation session, enjoying a walk or just sitting back for a relaxing coffee break.

The Wellness team

Alberta Blue Cross® has its very own internal team focused on employee wellness. We rely on them for organizing ongoing wellness activities, but they go above-and-beyond by spearheading other wellness events throughout the year, such as wellness challenges, wellness lunch and learns and our annual themed Block party. During your onboarding, you will also have an opportunity to participate directly with the Wellness team by attending The Working Mind mental health training session.

Balance®

Alberta Blue Cross®’s online wellness program, Balance, is a great resource to help you on your journey towards improving and maintaining your health and overall wellness.

Balance gets you started by taking small steps towards lasting change. For example, if you want to improve your diet, Balance can help you transition from unhealthy to healthy choices. Or if you find it difficult to keep track of your medications, Balance can gently nudge you with a friendly email reminder.

Summit wellness centre

The summit wellness centre is our onsite fitness facility at our Edmonton office. Team members can take advantage of our studio class space, cardio room, weight and resistance training room, locker rooms and showers. We also offer instructor-led classes and registered programs depending on your preferences and style. Classes are virtual, in person or both depending on the session.

Flexible hours

Each full-time employee is required to work a minimum of 7.5 hours a day. We offer flexible working hours and different work styles based on your role that allow you to build up time and take an Earned Day Off (EDO) every month.

Onsite parking

Alberta Blue Cross® has parking stalls that are rented to Alberta Blue Cross® team members. Team members at our Edmonton office without specified stalls can use the daily parking option when needed which offers half-day and full-day options.

Lifelong learning

BLUniversity and YOUniversity

Our employees come from a wide variety of backgrounds and have a range of different hobbies and interests, so it’s not surprising they have a lot of knowledge to share. That’s why we started BLUniversity and YOUniversity, our in-house training programs designed to enhance our employee’s professional skills and personal interests.

BLUniversity is a series of courses focused on professional development. Anyone may join in, but as some sessions take place during business hours, just make sure you have your manager’s approval before signing up.

YOUniversity is a series of courses focused on personal interests and hobbies. These classes are taught by Alberta Blue Cross employees and typically take place over the lunch hour. Sessions in the past have covered topics like home composting, Instant Pot cooking, coping strategies and gardening. Have a topic you’re passionate about? Let us know! Our next YOUniversity class could be led by you.

BLUshop

Along with BLUniversity, we offer lunchtime workshops through our BLUshop program. BLUshops emphasize health and wellness through a hands-on approach. Each session introduces a different topic and host, many of whom are external to Alberta Blue Cross. Some of the topics we’ve covered before include Healthy Eating Habits by Homewood Health, Lung Health by the Lung Association and Ten Healthy Habits of Money Management by the Chartered Professional Accountants of Alberta.
