1947

  • Oil is discovered at Leduc No. 1.
  • Thousands of people arrive in Alberta for the oil boom.
  • To help this influx of new Albertans, Joe Monaghan drafts legislation that will allow people to pre-pay for medical care.

1948

  • The Associated Hospitals of Alberta vote for Joe’s plan.
  • Alberta Blue Cross® is born, with plans starting at $1/month.
  • First Alberta Blue Cross® office opens in downtown Edmonton.
  • Alberta Blue Cross® staff administer 50,000 plans with just one typewriter.

1960s

  • New, bigger office opens in downtown Edmonton.
  • The Medical Care Act passes, granting universal health care in Canada.
  • Alberta Blue Cross® extends its benefits to cover ambulance trips, prescription drugs and home nursing care.

1970s

  • Alberta’s economy diversifies and grows.
  • Alberta Blue Cross® launches plans for large businesses, travellers and government.
  • Regional offices added across Alberta.

1980s

  • Coverage added for dental care, outside Canada emergency medical care and disability and life insurance.
  • Current office in downtown Edmonton opens.
  • First personal computers used by staff.

1990s

  • First Alberta Blue Cross® website launched.
  • Alberta Blue Cross® becomes first benefits provider in Canada to introduce direct billing at pharmacies.
  • Alberta government introduces the ABC Benefits Corporation Act.
  • ABC Benefits Corporation Act continues operation of the Alberta Blue Cross® plan.
